Studying Guide
This guide will aim to give you a general idea of what path to take while self-studying with Quartet: Intermediate Japanese Across the Four Language Skills. Please see the section below for info on how to tackle each lesson.
Study Routine
Below is a list of things to do each lesson.
- Memorize the Vocabulary for the current lesson. You can do this with either the Anki decks or the 単語 exercises under each lesson on this website (ex. Lesson 1). If using the latter method, please see this page for tips on memorizing vocabulary. The 漢字の単語 exercises are optional, but you're free to do them to learn additional words and aid with memorizing the kanji readings for this lesson.
- Read up on the Grammar and 読みのストラテジー after the 読み物 section for the current lesson. Once you've finished reading up on the grammar, you can read the 読み物 section along with the writing, speaking and listening sections to practice the grammar alongside the new vocab you acquired in Step 1.
- Read the 初級文法チェック/上級へのチャレンジ and 漢字チャレンジ sections. I recommend reading 1 or 2 sections from the Grammar sections per lesson, specifically the points that coincide with your current lesson, and 2 Kanji challenge sections per lesson. You can then follow these up with their respective workbook exercises. As for kanji, you can practice both the current lesson's and brush up kanji under the 漢字の練習 exercises.
- Do the Practice Exercises (such as 読む前に/読んだ後で、the problems in the 書く and 話す sections, etc.) in the textbook.
- Do the Workbook Exercises for the current lesson. If anything is unclear, feel free to review the grammar point in the textbook.
- Repeat the Steps Above for each Lesson until you finish Quartet.
That's everything! On average it can take about 1-2 weeks to complete a lesson, but this varies from person to person (for example, it took me around 3 weeks alongside development of this website). So, take your time and ensure that you properly understand the contents of each lesson! Even if it's just a little each day, as long as you try to study daily you'll slowly but surely come to better understand the language. Keep at it and best of luck on your studies!
